The International Democratic Education Conferences (IDECs) have been held every year since 1993, each time in a different country. They attract up to around 500 participants from more than thirty different countries, and usually last for a week.
Conferences are run by schools or other organisations, and are sometimes almost entirely organised by students. There is an emphasis on participation rather than formal lectures, and they are open to anyone interested in democratic education.
Conference fees and board and lodging are kept as low as possible. Travel is usually the most expensive item for participants.
Since 2010 regional conferences have also sprung up. These include EUDEC in Europe, ADEC in Australia and JDEC in Japan, among others.
