The Otherwise Club is a community centre for families choosing to educate their children out of school for a variety of reasons. It includes a small café and alternative education library. The club provides regular workshops such as pottery, drawing, drama and dance two history groups and a groups studying for various GCSEs including drama, Spanish and English. We have special events and group activities such as robot building, puppet making, felt making, visits from police dog handlers and so on. The club organises various educational outings to such places as The Tower of London, The Chiltern Open Air Museum and the Science Museum and so on. We have organised various trips away including an annual trip to an organic farm in Glastonbury in February where the whole family can work on the land, feed the animals and learn about life on a farm in all its aspects. We also run a Duke of Edinburgh Award group for the older children where the young people learn camp craft, navigation and must plan and execute an expedition without adult help. We are also keen to support young people to see Europe as part of their home. Therefore we have taken groups of children away to mainland Europe; for example we spent a week in Venice during the carnival where the young people performed their own street theatre to great acclaim and Caen where we studied the history of France and England. Our second visit to Pompeii is happening in March 2014. We have also organised exchanges between our older young people and those from a German free school (2012) and a Spanish free school (2013). We are planning to go to Germany for a 10 day cultural meet up with young people from seven EU countries in the summer 2014.
