My predecessor David Gribble and his wife Lynette were asked, at the Tokyo IDEC in 2000, to set up a network for democratic educators. At that time some of the newsletters had to be sent out by post, because not everyone who was interested had email. Now things have developed and we have mailing lists in several different languages (from the next edition again!), and a website, and it is time for another change. As David wrote, Peter Foti is the man who is going to take it on. We have talked a lot together about democratic education, and he is enthusiastic and energetic. I am sure IDEN will flourish in his hands.
Some words about myself:
I am Hungarian and I live with my family in Austria, have a son who attends the SchülerInnenschule in Vienna. (He visited Summerhill and Sands School for longer times too.)
Some fifteen years ago I read A.S. Neill’s book about Summerhill which made me rethink my views about education. Further reading led me to W.B. Curry, writer and practitioner of democratic education and headmaster of Dartington Hall School – I believe his ideas are closest to my own.
As a result of my reading I began to promote the ideas of democratic education in Hungary and 2011, with my friends, I founded the Hungarian branch of EUDEC. (www.demokratikusneveles.hu) I am proud to say, that now democratic schools exist in Hungary (www.horizontiskola.hu, http://www.kag.hu/ ), and I hope that this worldwide movement will result in more and more schools moving in our direction.
